Philippine security forces have recovered massive explosives that might be used for bombing attacks in a safe-house in South Cotabato province, local police said Friday.
Superintendent Robert Kiunisala, police director of Koronadal city, told media that the explosives, composed of six 40-milimiter mortar shells and one rifle grenade, were seized on Wednesday by policemen hunting down a suspected bomber, certain Nilo Dugaduga.
"We have been receiving threats of bombing attacks since December last year. And it may be part of the plan," Kiunisala said.
The authorities arrested last week a Muslim rebel in Manila. Muaweya Abubakar Masabpi, a member of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), was believed to be involved in a series of fatal bombings in the Mindanao region since 2002, Xinhua reported.
The Al-Khobar gang, an extortion group that has ties with Al Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf militants, was blamed for the previous bomb attacks in the region.
