Nine people died early Wednesday in two clashes between security forces and alleged kidnappers in the central Mexican state of Guanajuato, the authorities confirmed, dpa reported.

One clash happened in the city of Celaya, while the other took place in the nearby Valle de Santiago. Police had initially said 10 people were killed.

The authorities said police officers were attacked with grenades when they attempted to chase alleged kidnappers. When police reacted to the attack, four suspects were killed, three were injured and four others were arrested, the authorities said.

The authorities said the clash in Valle de Santiago also happened in a chase, although no further details were made public.
