The President of Lebanon Michele Suleiman said at the Arab summit in Qatar that the development of the relations between Lebanon and Syria is necessary for both countries, AlJazeera TV channel reported.

The 21st Arab summit began on March 30 in the capital of Qatar, Doha, and will continue two days.

Basic themes of the summit are the situation in Sudan, situation on the Palestinian territories and future of Arab peace initiative, and also Arab regulating and global economic crisis.

For the first time in the history of Lebanon and Syria's gaining independence, the relations between the two countries develop without problems, said Suleiman.

"Re-establishment of relations between Lebanon and Syria is necessary for the development of inter-Arab relations" said Suleiman.

In mid March the Lebanese embassy was opened in Syria after Syria sent its ambassador to Lebanon in the end of 2008.

The relations between the two countries broke after assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri. The accusations fell on the Syrian high-ranking officials, and in 2006 Damascus was forced to withdraw its troops from Lebanon after 20 years stay in the country.

Arab countries must strengthen strategy of fighting against the Israeli occupation of Arab territories, said Suleiman.

If Israel continues destructive policy against the Palestinians, then Arab countries must take measures to protect the rights of the Palestinians and solve this problem through their forces.

The process of overcoming the inter-Arab differences started in January 2009 at the mini-summit in Kuwait. After two months, the efforts in this regard were continued during the meeting of the leaders of Saudi Arabia, Syria and Egypt in Er-Riyadh. As a result of the meeting, a new stage in the inter-Arab relations commenced, RIA Novosti reported.

The Qatar summit of the League of Arab States (LAG) was not attended by the heads of Egypt, Algeria, Iraq, Morocco and Oman.

LAG summit will conclude on March 31, after which the second summit of the Arab countries and countries of South America will take place in Doha.
