Ban says UN respects independence of ICC

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon said here on Monday that the United Nations respects the independence of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and its judicial process, Xinhua reported.
   Ban made the statement after Sunday voluntary appearance of Bahr Idriss Abu Garda before the ICC in response to charges of war crimes committed on Sept. 29, 2007 at the Haskanita base of the African Union Mission in Sudan.
   The secretary-general, in a statement issued here by his spokesperson, said that he took note of Garda's voluntary appearance before the ICC and "commends the Court's efforts to ensure accountability for crimes against peacekeepers and emphasizes that the United Nations respects the independence of the Court and its judicial process."
