The Sri Lankan government said Friday that the government has eased restrictions on UN vehicles in and out of Internal Displaced Person (IDP) welfare centers in the north where around 300,000 war displaced civilians are being accommodated, Xinhua reported.
"Despite the risk of possible terrorist infiltrations, the above measure has been taken by the Sri Lankan government to make UN humanitarian aid distributions smoother," said the Department of Government Information in a statement.
The statement said that UN officials and the Sri Lankan government have decided on an interim measure whereby UN vehicles including trucks have access to Menik Farm, the largest IDP camp in northern Sri Lanka.
However, only single vehicular traffic is allowed at a time, and not convoys, the statement stressed.
The statement added that UN officials are asked to enter Menik Farm without UN flag on their vehicles.
Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse said last week that Tamil Tiger rebels have been totally defeated, ending the island's three-decade-old civil war sparkled by the rebels' claim that the minority Tamils were being discriminated by the majority Sinhalese dominated government.
