Two separate gun battles in India-administered Kashmir have resulted in the deaths of three rebels and one Indian soldier, Press TV reported.

The overnight combats broke out in the districts of Kupwara - 90 kilometers northwest of the state capital, Srinagar - and Rajouri, during 'cordon and search' operations backed by counter-insurgency police, AFP reported.

The unrest in the region has escalated in recent months after a moratorium on clashes following the 2004peace talks between India and Pakistan.

The much-disputed Kashmir region is divided into two parts, one ruled by India and the other by Pakistan. Neither India nor Pakistan has formally recognized the accession of the areas claimed by the other state and both sides have so far fought several declared wars over the territory.

India has accused neighboring Pakistan of training and supporting militants who regularly penetrate into its Kashmir and launch attacks. Pakistan has refuted the allegations.
