Clash between Taliban and police in the relatively peaceful Kunduz province in north Afghanistan left two insurgents dead and wounded three others, provincial police chief Mohammad Razaq Yaqubi said Sunday, Xinhua reported.

"The militants attacked police checkpoint in Khanabad district Saturday night and police killed two rebels on the spot and injured three others," Yaqubi told Xinhua.

Meantime, Taliban purported spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed responsibility for the attack, and in talks with media via telephone from unknown location said eight policemen were killed, a claim utterly rejected by police as mere propaganda.

Kunduz, a peaceful province in north Afghanistan, has seen Taliban regrouping and surge in their activities.
