Favourite Christine Nesbitt clinched gold for Canada in the 1,000-metres women's speed skating in a thrilling climax at the Richmond Olympic Oval on Thursday, dpa reported.

Nesbitt edged Annette Gerritsen of the Netherlands by 0.02 seconds, with Laurine van Riessen capturing the bronze for the Dutch.

Nesbitt, 24, the 2009 world champion over the distance, now has a gold to go with the silver she won in the team pursuit at the 2006 Turin Games.

It was a tense wait for Nesbitt who posted 1 minute 16.56 and then had to look on knowing she had won at least a bronze as the last pair, team-mate Kiristina Groves and a third Dutch challenge in Margot Boer, took to the start.

Groves, the 1,500m silver medallist in 2006, did not quite do enough for the bronze, finishing fourth with Japan's Nao Kodaira fifth and Boer sixth.

Groves is, however, ranked top ahead of Sunday's 1,500m when Nesbitt will be one of her closest rivals.
