German police said Friday they intervened to prevent a 15-year-old schoolgirl who has Serbian nationality from being married in Berlin against her will, DPA reported.

A Hamburg radio station, NDR 90.3, said the girl had used an internet connection to seek help from friends after being taken to Berlin Tuesday night. One of her schoolteachers in Hamburg then asked police to help, pointing out her absence from school was illegal.

Police spokesman Andreas Schoepflin told the German Press Agency dpa "She was supposed to get married in Berlin on May 1." He said the girl had told the male teacher earlier about the marriage plan.

Berlin police took her away from the apartment of "the intended husband," NDR said. No other details on the case were disclosed.

German law requires people to be 18 to marry. Those aged 16 or 17 can marry with court consent.
