Serbia charges former defence minister over renting spy satellite

A Serbian prosecutor indicted former defence minister Prvoslav Davinic for abuse of office in connection with a contract renting the services of an Israeli spy satellite, local media reports said Tuesday.

Davinic is accused of signing the 45-million-dollar contract with Israeli company ImageSet in 2005 without proper authorization, prosecutors said.

Serbia tried to back out of the deal. Following years of litigation, an international court in Paris ordered Belgrade to pay the company 36 million euros (47 million dollars) in damages, DPA reported.

Davinic was separately implicated in connection with inflated invoices for military equipment.
