An imam was shot dead Friday by a gunman who fired on worshippers near a mosque in the Muslim-oriented semi-autonomous Russian republic of Dagestan, DPA reported according to Itar-Tass.

One man was injured in the incident, which occurred in the village of Tarki, the news agency quoted the interior ministry of Dagestan as saying.

A saleswoman was shot dead in the neighbouring republic of Ingushetia. A bomb exploded when security forces arrived on the scene, killing a policeman and injuring 21 other people.

Earlier, security forces killed a man who tried to lure them into an ambush.

Ingushetia and Dagestan are located in the northern Caucasus where Islamist rebels seeking to break away from Moscow have been fighting security forces loyal to the Kremlin.
