Poland to raise VAT by 1 per cent

The Polish government was set to raise the value- added tax rate by 1 percentage point to 23 per cent in an effort to protect the country from public debt, Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Friday, DPA reported.

The tax hike should not mean an increase in the price of food items, Tusk said after a meeting with the government on a financial plan for 2010 to 2013.

The government was set to approve the final version of the financial plan on Tuesday. The plan will then go before parliament, where it is expected to pass.

The opposition Law and Justice party criticized the tax hike, saying the government had lied when it promised not to raise taxes
