Medvedev donates 12,000 dollars to wildfire victims

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has donated 9,000 euros (12,000 dollars) of his own money towards the rebuilding of homes destroyed in wildfires, his spokeswoman said Saturday dpa reported

"It is expected that other senior officials will follow the president's example," said Natalia Timakova, according to the Ria Novosti news agency.

Thousands of people have been made homeless by the woodland and peat bog fires that have raged across parts of the country for weeks.

The president hoped that ordinary citizens would also donate money to the victims.

The speaker of the lower house of parliament, Boris Gryzlov and the speaker of the upper house, Sergey Mironov, had previously each promised around 2,500 euros
