The costs for BP Plc of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico have risen to 6.1 billion dollars, the company said Monday, dpa reported.

The total includes the cost of the spill response, containment, relief well drilling, and cementing up of the damaged well.

BP said that approximately 145,000 claims for compensation had so far been submitted, of which about 104,000 had been settled, at a cost of 319 million dollars.

BP confirmed that its recent efforts to fill cement into the leaking well had been successful and construction of the first relief well was expected to be completed by August 15
