A senior Lithuanian police officer is being held in custody in Belarus on drugs smuggling charges, Lithuanian media reported Wednesday.

According to media reports Laimonas Bankauskas, commander of the Baltic state's mounted police section, was arrested Monday in the Asmena district of Belarus, not far from the Lithuanian border, DPA reported.

Lithuania's Ambassador to Belarus Edminas Bagdonas said the 37-year-old police officer had been charged with possession and smuggling of drugs. He had yet to speak to Bankauskas but said members of his family believed the arrest was a "set-up."

Bankauskas is believed to have been on holiday at the time of his arrest.
