Ten members of the National Guard died when a military helicopter on an anti-drug mission crashed, Venezuelan officials said Saturday, dpa reported.
The head of the National Guard, Luis Motta, announced on state television that the plane crashed Friday evening in the state of Apure in the mountainous southwest border area with Colombia.
The reasons for the crash were not clear. The Russian MI-17 aircraft crashed between Buena Vista and Cararabo. Investigators have been sent to the crash site.
Venezuela's left-wing populist President Hugo Chavez called the accident a tragedy.
