Police in southern Afghanistan Sunday found the bodies of five members of the electoral campaign of a female Afghan parliamentary election candidate, an official said, dpa reported.

At least 10 campaigners for Fawzia Gilani, a candidate for the September 18 parliamentary polls, were kidnapped in Farsi, a district in western province of Herat last week.

Taliban insurgents claimed responsibility for abducting only five of the campaigners.

"The bodies of these men were found in Mian Koh, an area in Adraskan district of Herat province today but we don't have reports about five others," a police officer who requested anonymity said.

Separately, unknown gunmen killed an election candidate in the province late Saturday.

"Abdul Manan Hashimi was shot dead by unidentified motorcyclists on his way to a mosque in Herat's Shindand district, Lal Mohammed Omarzai," an official in the district said.

Taliban insurgents are believed to be behind the killings in a campaign to disrupt the parliamentary elections process.
