Family killed by falling rock in Honduras; rain causes landslides

Five members of a Honduran family were killed Sunday by a giant boulder unleashed by heavy rains, while elsewhere in the capital some 300 homes were destroyed by a landslide, officials said, dpa reported.

Three other children in the family were injured in the accident in a northern neighbourhood of capital Tegucigalpa.

Heavy rains prompted the landslide and the rock to fall from an overhang into a settlement, destroying several buildings.

Rains from southern Mexico to Nicaragua have caused widespread flooding and tens of thousands of residents have had to be evacuated. Dozens have drowned or been killed by landslides.

At least 35 people were killed in Nicaragua over the weekend and some 20 have died in Honduras.
