At least 15 children were killed Tuesday when a bus plunged into a river in the Pakistan-administrated part of Kashmir, the police said, DPA reported.

The school bus went out of control on a mountain road in the Garhi Dopatta area of Muzafarabad district, about 140 kilometres north-east of Islamabad.

"Fifteen bodies have been recovered from the river while we have rescued four children and the bus driver," senior police officer Ghulam Akbar said by telephone.

He said the bus was carrying over 30 children.

Rescue workers were searching for those missing, local media said.

A police investigator said that the steering of the 40-year-old bus had apparently jammed before the accident.
