Sarkozy and Merkel to meet Medvedev at Deauville

French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel are to hold talks with Russia President Dmitry Medvedev in the French resort of Deauville on Monday, DPA reported.

The French and German leaders will try to convince Medvedev, during the two-day meeting, that Russia has nothing to fear from a missile-defence shield NATO will likely develop and that it is in Russia's interest to be part of the system.

Last week, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen called on NATO leaders to invite Russia to join the system, once it has been agreed.

A decision on the missile shield is likely to be taken at the NATO summit in Lisbon, on November 11-12.

Other issues to be discussed at Deauville include the developing partnership between Europe and France and the Group of Twenty (G20) summit to be held November 11-12 in Seoul.
