At least 40 people were killed and over 50 others  injured Monday as two suicide bombers targeted a government office in Mohmand tribal region in northwestern Pakistan, officials and witnesses said, Xinhua reported.

The attacks took place near the office of the local administrator Amjad Ali Khan in Ghalanai where local tribal elders were holding a meeting with government officials, the official PTV reported.

The injured were shifted to Peshawar, the capital of northwest Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa province, for treatment.

The security forces tried to arrest the second bomber shortly after the first blast but he also detonated his bomb, officials said.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks. The security forces imposed a curfew and sealed off the town.

Pakistani Taliban militants were usually behind attacks on pro- government tribal elders and security forces in Pakistan's restive tribal belt along the border with Afghanistan.

This was the second major suicide attack in Mohmand in five months.

In July, a Taliban suicide bomber killed nearly 100 people in Mohmand when he struck the office of local administrator.
