Czech police officers and firefighters on Wednesday protested against cuts to their wages in front of the parliament building, as lawmakers prepared to pass an austerity budget for 2011, DPA reported.

A 10-per-cent cut in the budget for public sector wages is among measures aimed at slashing the Czech Republic's budget deficit to 4.6 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP) next year, from 5.1 per cent projected for this year.

As stationary demonstrations in front of parliament are banned, the estimated 100 protesters walked in a circle in front of the building amid heavy snowfall.

The modest protest is the third labour union action against the wage cuts since September when tens of thousands of state employees took to the streets of Prague.

Fewer than 150,000 public sector workers went on a day-long strike last week to protest the cuts and other changes to their salaries.
