An Afghan district governor escaped unharmed on Saturday when a suicide bomber targeted his convoy in southern Afghanistan, but two civilians were killed and eight injured in the blast, an official said, DPA reported.
Four children were among those injured, he said.
Ahmadullah Nazak, the governor for Dand district in Kandahar province was travelling home when a suicide bomber tried to ram his explosive-laden vehicle into his convoy, Zalmai Ayoubi, spokesman for the provincial governor said.
The bomber missed Nazak's vehicle but instead detonated his car among bystanders, killing two people and injuring either others, he said in a statement.
No group immediately took responsibility for Saturday's attack, which bore the hallmark of Taliban movement. The militants rely heavily on the use of suicide and roadside bombings as part of their more than nine-year-insurgency.
Kandahar was scene of major NATO-led operation this year, where the coalition forces made "significant progress" against Taliban in their spiritual home, according US Admiral Mike Mullen, who was talking in Kabul on Friday.
