A soldier with the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) was killed Wednesday in an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) attack in Afghanistan's restive south region, the military alliance said, Xinhua reported.

"An International Security Assistance Force service member died following an improvised explosive device attack in southern Afghanistan Wednesday," the ISAF confirmed in a brief statement released to media here.

However, it did not reveal the nationality of the victim, saying it is the ISAF's policy to defer casualty identification procedures to the relevant national authorities.

The Wednesday casualty has brought to four the number of ISAF soldiers to be killed since the New Year Day Saturday.

Seven hundred and eleven NATO soldiers with the majority of them Americans had been killed in 2010.
