AC Milan join big guns in Italian Cup quarter finals

AC Milan trounced visiting minnows Bari 3-0 Thursday in the closing game of the round of 16 of the Italian Cup, dpa reported.

The Serie A leaders pressed Bari into their midfield from the start and forced a first save from Daniele Padelli when Zlatan Ibrahimovic fired firmly on nine minutes.

Brazilian Robinho aimed wide before a feeble effort from Ibra, who was ruthless on 19 minutes when he stormed from outside the area and had the better of Kamil Glik to fire into the far corner.

Robinho had another nasty drive saved before feeding young German Alexander Merkel for a winning drive on 45 minutes.

Bari's best chance went begging before the break when Belarus forward Vitali Kutuzov deflected a cross above the bar.

In a rather uneventful second half, Merkel paid back Robinho with a great assist for a third goal that sealed the Devils' win.

In Wednesday action, Roma edged Lazio 2-1 in a city derby and Sampdoria qualified after beating guests Udinese in a 5-4 penalty shoot-out that followed a 2-2 draw.

On Tuesday, Napoli clinched a 2-1 win over guests Bologna.

In the quarter finals next week, trophy holders Inter Milan tackle Napoli, Juventus play against Roma, Palermo face off with Parma and Milan clash with Sampdoria.
