Germany urges dialogue and non-violence in Egypt

The German government urged dialogue and non-violence in Egypt Wednesday, a day after demonstrations in Cairo and clashes with security forces which left at least three people dead, DPA reported.

Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle told reporters, "The path to stability lies via democracy." He said this included freedom of assembly. "That is the best. That also applies to Egypt," he said.

Westerwelle added, "We call on all involved to exercise restraint and non-violence." He said Germany had repeatedly told Egyptian officials in the past that a dialogue within society was important in achieving stability.
