Sarkozy: 'We'll never abandon the euro'

French President Nikolas Sarkozy, in strong comments recalling past hostilities between France and Germany, vowed Thursday in Davos that Europe would "never abandon" the single euro currency, DPA reported.

At the World Economic Forum annul meetings, Sarkozy said he could also speak for German Chancellor Angela Merkel in expressing the backing for the euro.

"We will never turn our backs on the Euro, we will never abandon the euro," the French leader said.

Drawing on past European history, Sarkozy noted that Germany and France had waged three barbaric wars.

"Now Europe is the most stable continent in the world," he said. "We will never permit it that the euro is dismantled or destroyed."

Those who would speculate against the euro should be careful about where they invested, the French president warned. "The euro spells Europe," he said.
