EU criticizes Egypt government over failure to stop violence

The European Union's foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton reprimanded Egyptian authorities on Thursday for failing to prevent the latest violence in the country, DPA reported.

"I urge the Egyptian authorities to immediately take the necessary measures to ensure that the law enforcement authorities protect the demonstrators and their right to assembly freely," Ashton said in a statement.

Those responsible for the loss of life and injuries in Egypt should "be held accountable for their actions and brought to justice," she said.

Ashton also condemned the intimidation and aggression of journalists reporing on the political unrest.
