Thieves rob European Parliament post office during summit

Thieves robbed a post office within the European Parliament headquarters in Brussels Friday, officials said, just as European Union leaders were meeting in a building nearby, DPA reports.

Two people entered the parliament's post office and made off with "a small amount of money," parliament spokesman Jaume Duch told the German Press Agency dpa.

"The police are here investigating," he added.

The EU parliament lies just outside the security area that is normally laid out on the occasion of EU summits - an exercise which takes up a lot of Belgian police resources.

Timothy Kirkhope, head of the British conservative delegation in the EU assembly, expressed outrage at the third robbery in two years "potentially involving guns" within the parliament's premises.

"This is an absolutely disgraceful situation, not least on a day when there is a good possibility that EU heads of state and governments could be in the building," he said in a statement.
