At least 30 militants were killed in overnight clashes with the army in two tribal districts in north-western Pakistan, security officials said on Sunday.

They said more than 100 alleged fighters attacked an outpost of paramilitary Frontier Corps in Salalah area of Mohmand near the Afghan border after midnight, dpa reported.

"The soldiers promptly reacted to the enemy fire and forced the militants to take cover in the mountains, where army surrounded and killed around 20 assailants," the officials said.

He said 30 insurgents were wounded in the combat that lasted until after 3 am (1000 GMT).

About 10 alleged militants were also killed by air and ground forces in the Dabori area of Orakzai district, officials said.

"We have been told that 10 militants were killed and three injured in the well-coordinated attack," an intelligence source said on the condition of anonymity.

Regular army and paramilitary troops launched an offensive in the district last year and claimed to have retaken control.

But militants are still active and occasionally attack troops and civilians in neighbouring Hangu and Kohat districts.
