Colin Firth won the Oscar for best actor for his role as a stammering regent in The King's Speech, dpa reported.
"I have a feeling my career's just peaked," he joked when accepting the award.
Firth, 50, has previously starred in The English Patient, Shakespeare in Love, Bridget Jones's Diary, Mamma Mia! and Love Actually. Firth is also a human rights activist and an author of a collection of short stories.
In The King's Speech, he plays King George VI who overcomes a debilitating stammer when he takes the throne to lead his country to victory over the Nazis in World War II.
