Bundesliga club Schalke 04 and Tottenham Hotspur held onto their advantages from their first leg matches to advance to the quarter-finals of the Champions League on Wednesday, dpa reported.
Schalke beat Valencia 3-1 to advance 4-2 on aggregate, while Spurs managed to advance to the round of the last eight for the first time after holding former champions AC Milan to a goalless draw in London.
In Gelsenkirchen Valencia took the lead after just 17 minutes after Mehmet Topal evaded several challenges from Joel Matip and crossed into the area, where Ricardo Costa headed home.
Schalke, who during the day were thrown into turmoil when it was announced that coach Felix Magath's contract would be terminated at the end of the season, equalized with a well-taken Jefferson Farfan free-kick five minutes from the break.
Twenty-one-year-old Swiss striker Mario Gavranovic, who was making only his second start for the Bundesliga side, put the German club ahead in the 52nd minute.
Valencia goalkeeper Vicente Guaita failed to connect a cross from Peer Kluge, allowing Farfan a shot at goal, which the Peruvian international shot straight at Guaita, who however failed to hold onto the ball.
Gavranovic's shot from close range bounced against both poles before crossing over the line.
Both sides then had some chances to add to their score, but it was Farfan who put the matter beyond doubt with his second goal deep into injury time to see the Bundesliga club through to Friday's quarter- finals draw in Nyon.
Schalke coach Felix Magath said that his side played well and deserved to advance. "I think at the beginning of the game the draw from the first match actually put us under pressure as it was kind of a thing between defending and attacking.
"What made the difference was the equalizer that Jefferson Farfan scored shortly before the break and the fantastic save that Manuel Neuer made to prevent them from going through."
In London Tottenham Hotspur played defensively against AC Milan, who struggled to find a way through a compact Spurs defence.
Robinho came very close midway through the first half after Pato went around goalkeeper Gomes and pulled the ball back to his compatriot Robinho, whose shot took a deflection before defender William Gallas cleared with an acrobatic shot on the line.
Spurs continued sitting back and hoping for breaks, but seldom managed to create any chances themselves, but at the same time also prevented the former champions from putting the Spurs backline under any real pressure.
"It's a huge night for us," Tottenham striker Peter Crouch said. "We defended magnificently - we had to dig in and defend from the front and I think we deserved it over the two legs."
On Tuesday Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk advanced 6-2 on aggregate after a 3-0 victory against AS Roma, while Barcelona ousted Arsenal with a 3-1 win on the night for a 4-3 aggregate win.
