Volkswagen is planning to launch a new Cross Passat station wagon in 2012 as an alternative to the all-road Audi A4, according to a report in Germany's auto-motor-sport magazine.
Based on the Variant 4motion, the Cross Passat features 20 millimetres additional ground clearance, underbody protection and a suspension built for travelling on rough terrain. In addition it comes with sports seats, 17-inch light alloys and fog lamps, dpa reported.
Wider fenders and other exterior features give it a distinct offroad look. Among the engine choices are the two-litre 140 and 170 hp turbodiesels. But a V6 petrol version with an output of 300 hp is also in the planning, according to the report.
Customers can expect to pay at least 1,500 euros (2,083 dollars) more for the Cross version than for the standard Passat Variant 4motion.
