Libyan leader Moamer Gaddafi is "absolutely not" a target of an ongoing international military action in Libya, a senior British military official told the BBC Monday.

"It's not allowed under the UN resolution," said David Richards, Britain's chief of defence staff, adding that Gaddafi was "absolutely not" a target of British forces and that the mission was exclusively to protect civilians, dpa reported.

The comments add another layer to the ongoing debate about what powers last week's UN Security Council Resolution 1973 gave international forces as they try to control the fighting in Libya.

British Defence Minister Liam Fox hinted Sunday that Gaddafi could be a target of the ongoing military action. But such an approach was termed "unwise" by US Defence Secretary Robert Gates.
