Over 10 insurgents killed in Afghan air raid

An airstrike conducted by NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) on Sunday killed more than 10 insurgents in Afghanistan's eastern Paktika province, the military alliance said.

"The insurgents were armed with rocket propelled grenades. The air weapons team engaged both positions killing more than 10 insurgents," Xinhua quoted the statement as saying.

Paktika and neighboring Khost province have seen an escalation of Taliban-led insurgency over the past years.

Both security forces and Taliban fighters have intensified activities to consolidate positions as the spring fighting season is nearing in the war-ravaged Afghanistan.

ISAF on Saturday said it had launched an investigation in airstrike conducted Friday on two vehicles believed to be carrying Taliban fighters but accidently killed and injured a number of civilians in Now Zad district of Afghanistan's southern Helmand province.

Meanwhile, a statement released by Helmand provincial administration office said the air raid killed seven civilians including three children and injured five others.
