A series of violent tornadoes ripped across the US South on Wednesday, killing at least 25 people in Alabama alone, according to CNN.

One meteorologist said buildings simply disappeared in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, the whereabouts and fate of their occupants unknown, dpa reported.

The state of Georgia had requested a mass casualty trailer, AccuWeather.com reported.

Tennessee and Mississippi were also hard hit. There were reports of at least 127 tornadoes across the country as of 10 pm (0200 GMT).

Eleven people were killed on Monday and Tuesday by storms in the region.

Large long-tracking tornadoes snaked down from a cluster of thunderstorms that was still moving across the South late Wednesday.

"This is an extremely dangerous situation with serious concern for loss of life and property," AccuWeather reported.
