Coroners have been working day and night in Joplin, Missouri, to identify the dead, as 156 people were still reported missing Friday after this week's mammoth tornado, dpa reported.

The death toll rose by another six, for a total of 132, said the Missouri Department of Public Safety.

But 90 people who had been reported missing as of Thursday had been located, while another 22 people have been added to the missing list.

The unusually strong EF-5 twister destroyed or damaged thousands of buildings in the town of Joplin Sunday, cutting a swath 1.6 kilometres wide and 10 kilometres long.

US President Barack Obama plans to visit the storm site on Sunday after he returns from meetings in Europe.
