The death of Cabral, 74, has triggered off an outpouring of mourning and anguish for him among his fans, Xinhua reported.
Guatemala's Interior Minister Carlos Menocal said Cabral was on his way to the airport when three other motor vehicles boxed in the white Range Rover in which the Argentine singer was riding and opened fire, killing the singer on the spot and injuring his driver. The motive of the killing was not immediately known.
Cabral was born to a poor family in the city of La Plata, Argentina. He later went into exile in Mexico. He was best known for a song literally meaning "I'm Not From Here, I'm Not From There Either," which had been performed time and again by many other artists.
