South Korea plans to import anti-tank missiles from Israel to protect its islands along its border with North Korea, dpa reported Tuesday.
Seoul had struck an agreement with an Israeli defence manufacturer to purchase Spike NLOS rockets, Yonhap news agency reported, quoting military sources.
Around 50 anti-tank missiles with a 25-kilometre range were to be positioned next year on the islands of Baengnyong and Yonpyong in the Yellow Sea.
Four people died on Yonpyong last year when the island came under North Korean artillery fire. The incident significantly increased tensions between North and South Korea.
The Spike guided missiles, developed by the company Rafael Advanced Defence System, could reach North Korean artillery hidden in rock caves, Yonhap reported.
Yonpyong is located just 11 kilometres from the North Korean coast.
