Afghan and foreign soldiers in eastern Afghanistan killed about 60 Taliban insurgents in a rebel attack on the soldiers' base, a government spokesman said Wednesday.

The clash Tuesday night in the Barmal district of Paktika province near Pakistan, the provincial governor's spokesman said, DPA reported.

He said 60 to 70 fighters were killed while the combined forces suffered no injuries.

"The bodies of the insurgents are still in the battlefield and police are investigating to identify them," he said.

A NATO-led International Security Assistance Force spokesman confirmed that several insurgents attacked an "ISAF facility" in Barmal district.

"The forces responded with ground fire and close air support," Christopher Dewitt said.

"We know that there were significant casualties on insurgents' side but no civilians or coalition forces were hurt in the attack."
