At least 10 people were killed in a blast in an ammunition storage in the central Libya, a military official from the area said on Tuesday, reported dpa.

Al-Senussi al-Tayeb, head of military council in the area of Waddan, told the Libyan news agency that the explosion took place late Monday when someone lit a cigarette at the facility.

Seven Africans were among those killed in the blast.

The United Nations has repeatedly warned Libya's interim rulers that some weapons depots have not been secured properly, and arms were being smuggled out of the country.
