Valerie Amos, the UN emergency relief coordinator, will visit Syria to demand urgent access to areas of unrest and to assess the humanitarian situation in the country, the United Nations said Wednesday, DPA reported.

Amos was asked by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to go to Syria, where the UN has not been able to get a first-hand assessment of the situation on the ground during the 11 months of unrest and increasing fighting between government security forces and the opposition.

The UN said Amos will ask Damascus to allow relief workers to have access to those in need, as repeated UN calls to end the use of force have been ignored.

The UN estimates that more than 5,400 people have died.
