Former Germany goalkeeper Rene Adler will join SV Hamburg on a four-year contract from next season onwards on a free transfer from Bayer Leverkusen, Kicker sports magazine said on Thursday, DPA reported.

Kicker said that Adler, 27, has agreed to terms with Hamburg and will put pen to paper on the weekend.

Hamburg officials did not want to confirm the transfer, with coach Thorsten Fink quoted as saying he was concentrating on Friday's league match at Borussia Moenchengladbach.

Adler lost his place as Germany number one to Manuel Neuer when he missed the 2010 World Cup with a rib fracture. He has not played since knee surgery last summer but is set to resume training in March. Youngster Bernd Leno is the new Leverkusen number one.

Hamburg's current first choice Jaroslav Drobny has improved after a mediocre start at the northern German club, but the 32-year-old is also bothered by nagging knee problems.
