A magnitude-5.8 earthquake hit western Bulgaria early Tuesday, state radio reported.
The epicentre was located between Sofia and the town of Pernik, 30 kilometres south of the capital, DPA reported.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
Residents of the capital were woken by the quake just after 3 am (0100 GMT).
