Thousands of Muslims held a rally near a United States cultural centre in Kolkata city (India) Thursday to protest an anti-Islam film and pelted stones at policemen guarding the area, dpa reported.

Area police officer RK Mukherjee said the protestors numbering over 15,000 marched towards the city's American Center library shouting anti-US slogans.

"The protestors threw stones at the police who blocked the marchers from approaching the US consulate nearby. One policeman was injured," Mukherjee said.

The consulate and the centre was closed for the day owing to the protest. "The police brought the situation under control and the crowds dispersed later in the evening," Mukherjee said.

The film, Innocence of Muslims, which mocks the Muslim prophet Mohammed, has sparked violent protests in several countries.
