A reduced peacekeeping force will remain in Afghanistan after 2014, Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman said at a briefing in Astana on Thursday.

"I have recently returned from Afghanistan, where I have visited Kabul and Girate. And I will reiterate that the U.S. and the international community will keep their commitments to maintain its strong presence in Afghanistan after 2014," Sherman said after meeting with Kazakh Foreign Minister Yerlan Idrisov.

She said "combat troops will be withdrawn, but peacekeeping forces will still be there" in 2014.

"The people will stay to train Afghan troops and security forces so that they can build their own security forces. Basically, they will do what they are already doing, and made great progress in achieving this goal, because much of the country is controlled by Afghan forces," she said.
