Bomb kills 11 in south-western Pakistan

At least 11 people were killed and 27 injured Thursday in a bomb attack in Pakistan's south-western town of Quetta, police said, dpa reported.

The explosion took place at a main intersection of the city, the capital of Baluchistan province, Quetta police chief Mir Zubair Mehmood said.

The target was not immediately clear, but television footage showed a damaged paramilitary vehicle near what appeared to be a checkpoint at the site, which was cordoned off by the Frontier Corps, the paramilitary force with joint control of security in the region.

Nobody claimed responsibility for the attack.

Quetta and other parts of Baluchistan have been restive for several years, but attacks on security forces have increased in recent months. Militants have demanded greater control over the region's abundant natural resources.
