At least 10 people including eight policemen were killed and seven others injured when a buried artillery shell exploded in southern Afghanistan, dpa reported citing police as said Sunday.

"A police patrol that had defused a landmine in Kandahar city late Saturday and arrested three people was heading towards their station when a rocket shell hidden on the road struck their vehicle," Kandahar province police chief Abdul Raziq said.

"Eight policemen and two suspects were killed, and six policemen and one suspect were injured," he said.

Taliban sources were not immediately available for comment.

Earlier, 10 policemen were killed and 19 people were injured in a suicide attack in the northern city of Kunduz, the provincial capital of the province with the same name.
