Three people died and more than 2,000 fled to emergency accommodations in Mexico as a storm headed inland from the Pacific Ocean, authorities said Thursday, dpa reported.

The storm Barbara made landfall as a hurricane Wednesday on Mexico's southern Pacific coast and later became a tropical depression over southern Veracruz in eastern Mexico close to the Gulf coast.

In Oaxaca, a man was found dead Thursday after being carried off by the current of the El Chapulin river, increasing to three the number of people killed by Barbara in that state. A further 90 people were evacuated after flooding damaged their homes in Cachimbo, a town on an island in a lake by the sea.

Civil Protection in the state of Chiapas, which shares a border with Guatemala, said its emergency shelters had admitted 2,378 people.
