Baku, Azerbaijan, Jan. 22

Trend:

The media reports, which said that Russian President Vladimir Putin offered Syrian President Bashar Assad to resign, have been dismissed by Putin's spokesperson Dmitry Peskov.

"No, that is not the case," said Peskov Jan. 22, speaking on the matter with the TASS news agency.

Earlier, Financial Times reported that just weeks before his death on Jan. 3, Colonel-General Igor Sergun, director of Russia's Main Intelligence Directorate, was sent to Damascus upon Putin's request to offer Assad to leave his office.

Assad refused to step down, according to the newspaper report.
